When Is the Best Time to Capture Newborn Photos? | Perth Newborn Photographer

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most emotional and unforgettable moments. Those early days pass in such a blur, which is why so many families choose to invest in professional newborn photography to preserve this incredibly special season forever. As a Perth newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I’m asked is: “When is the best time to book newborn photos?” The truth is, there’s no wrong stage to capture your baby. Every season of newborn life is beautiful in its own way. It simply comes down to the style of images you love most and what feels right for your family.

Newborn Photography Between 1–4 Weeks

The most traditional time for newborn photography is within the first 1–4 weeks after birth. During these early weeks, babies are typically: sleepier, have a newborn scrunch, more settled and easier to gently pose. This stage is perfect for parents wanting those dreamy, sleepy newborn photographs with soft wraps, delicate details, and cosy cuddles.

As a Perth newborn photographer, these sessions are often calm, slow-paced, and baby-led, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and cuddles throughout the session.

Many families love capturing: tiny fingers and toes, flaky newborn skin, sleepy stretches, milk-drunk cuddles and those fresh newborn details that change so quickly

These early newborn sessions create timeless images that beautifully document just how tiny your baby once was.

Newborn Photos From 6 Weeks

If you miss the “traditional” newborn window — please don’t stress. Some of the most beautiful and personality-filled sessions happen a little later. From around 6 weeks onwards, babies often begin: smiling responsively, making eye contact, showing more personality and becoming more interactive. These sessions feel incredibly joyful and connected. Parents who prefer natural family interaction often love this stage because their baby is beginning to engage more with the world around them. As a Perth family and newborn photographer, I absolutely adore photographing older newborns and young babies because every little expression starts to shine through.

Around 12 Weeks — Interactive & Full of Personality

By around 12 weeks, babies are usually far more awake, expressive, and interactive. At this stage, many babies: smile regularly, respond to voices, enjoy eye contact, lift their heads during tummy time

and show gorgeous little personality traits. These sessions often feel playful, emotional, and full of connection. While babies may not sleep deeply throughout the session anymore, you gain something equally beautiful — genuine interaction and joyful expressions. For many families, this is actually their favourite stage to capture.

There Is No “Perfect” Time for Newborn Photos. One of the biggest misconceptions around newborn photography is that you’ve “missed your chance” if your baby is older than a few weeks. The reality is: every stage tells a different story.

Whether you choose:

a sleepy newborn session at 2 weeks old, smiling baby photos at 6–8 weeks, or interactive family moments at 12 weeks …your photographs will still become treasured memories for years to come.

As a Perth maternity, newborn, and family photographer, my approach is always centred around connection, emotion, and documenting your family naturally — no matter what stage your baby is in.

Booking Your Perth Newborn Photography Session

If you’re currently expecting, it’s recommended to book your newborn photography session during pregnancy to ensure availability around your due date. However, last-minute bookings are always welcome where possible, and older baby sessions are just as meaningful and beautiful.

Whether you’re dreaming of: sleepy newborn photographs, natural family images, candid baby smiles, or relaxed studio or in-home newborn photography…the most important thing is capturing this fleeting season before it changes. Because they never stay little for long.
